How did you get started in mountain biking?

Riding with my daughter.

What motivates you to keep pushing yourself in this sport?

 I love riding single track.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment in mountain biking so far?

Being elected Chairperson of KZN Schools Cycling

Can you describe your training routine or what a typical day of preparation looks like for you?

I train a 7 day cycle consisting of one day rest, two days intervals, 3 days endurance and one easy recovery ride.

What do you think is the most important skill for a mountain biker to develop?

I think you must never take the sport so seriously that it stops being fun.

Have you ever faced any setbacks or injuries in your career? How did you overcome them?

I have had injuries. Time heals. Rehab with a good Biokineticist can be very beneficial.

How do you approach race day? Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions?

I don't take racing that seriously. Make sure you eat before and during the race.

What’s the most challenging course you’ve raced on, and what made it difficult?

Cascades is the toughest track I have ridden. Those hills are brutal for us old guys.

What changes would you like to see in the mountain biking world?

I would like to see CSA employ professionals to manage our sport. I think volunteer management is fine for fun riding but professional sport people need sports that are professionally managed.

How important is the mountain biking community to you, and how do you stay connected with other riders?

All mtb riders are cool. It's very easy to identify and engage with our community.

Are there any riders or mentors who’ve inspired you along the way?

I enjoy helping others, especially if they need help related to mtb.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in mountain biking?

Buy 2nd hand and get the lightest bike with best components you can afford.
