What inspired you to start Tipping Point?

I previously worked for another coach who founded Tipping Point Coaching. In 2013, he generously handed the business over to me, and the rest, as they say, is history.

What's your favorite type of terrain to ride on?

As an avid mountain biker, I have a preference for gravel roads. I find that I am better suited for long-distance races rather than the short, technical segments.

What's the most challenging trail you've ever ridden?

I would say that the most challenging trail at high speed is the Umko Drop on day 2 of the Sani2c.

What's your go-to bike brand and model?

I have ridden many bikes over the years, but my favourite has to be the Santa Cruz Blur.

How often do you get out on the trails?

Not enough! With the academy expanding, cycling has taken a back seat. I don’t get as much time as I would like to spend out on the trails.

Do you prefer solo rides or group outings?

It's a tough one! These days, group rides, particularly with my athletes.

What's your favorite post-ride snack or meal?

Sushi!

Have you ever had any major crashes or injuries?

I have had my fair share of crashes, but the worst one was during a training ride down Sweet Waters, just outside Hilton. I was going 45 km/h when my rear tyre blew out, causing me to hit the ground hard.

How do you prepare for a long ride or race?

To prepare for long rides or races, I always make sure to focus on proper nutrition and hydration.

Do you have a favourite riding buddy or mentor?

Recently, I have had the opportunity to ride alongside my athletes, which I truly enjoy. This experience allows me to be not just a coach, but also a mentor to them.

How do you stay hydrated and fueled during a ride?

To stay hydrated and fueled for a ride, I ensure I consume plenty of fluids, food, gels, and bars. Additionally, I make sure to schedule enough pit stops to refuel.

What's the best part about MTB for you?

The best part of mountain biking for me is discovering hidden places that the average person wouldn’t typically have the chance to explore.

How do you choose which trails to ride?

Wherever the wind takes me!

What's the most important piece of gear or equipment for you?

The two essential pieces of equipment I rely on are my helmet, which comes first, followed by my Garmin.

What's the longest ride you've ever done?

Sani2c non-stop: 252 km with a riding time of 12 hours and 21 minutes.

What are you plans for Tipping Point for 2025 and beyond?

Watch this space! We have lots of exciting plans for the 2025 season. We are proud to be recognised as one of the top cycling academies in the country, and we have ambitious goals for the future. A heartfelt thank you to our amazing partners, parents, and athletes, all of whom have played a crucial role in our remarkable growth.
