Day 1: 60km

Leaving the race village, we soon start climbing out of the Tugela valley passed the historic Spionkop Lodge before a long descent through Mount Alice Farm. We will have great views of the Drakensberg mountains as we climb back up via Shongololo single track. Another long descent down Big Red, a 4 x4 track, takes us into St Anton’s – an exhilarating purpose-built track down a ravine riding through large herds of game. Riding along some quiet farm roads we eventually come to the challenge of the day Mike’s Pass. This short sharp cheeky climb challenges most riders before summiting out onto the most incredible views of the Tugela River far below. We then descend down the most fun sections of the day being Puffadder pass and Mazambane. Following single track riding along the banks of the Tugela River we eventually arrive home having had such a fun day out.

Day 2: 54km

To start the day we cross the big Tugela river over the bridge following quiet farm roads before climbing up Brakfontein hill which was used as a lookout during the Anglo Boer war. We then sweep down into the Kloof which is a beautiful African valley filled with Acacia trees and Aloes. We climb out of the other side on a well-built and challenging climb constructed by well known trail builder Glen Harrison. Some fast riding through dairy and cattle farms brings us into Tugela Morden game farm where regular sightings of giraffe occur. Dropping into Grand Canyon we follow the river bed before arriving at the base of Spioenkop mountain to tackle the climb. The Boer route as it is now called is this infamous gradual ascent created last year by the trail team and  involves a 4km 180m climb with 50 switch backs taking riders  to the summit of Spioenkop mountain. The 15km descent back down to the race village is probably some of the most exhilarating and enjoyable riding you will ever have before we welcome you home back to the race village.
